Healing Trauma with EMDR

It keeps playing over, and over, and over…

… like a video stuck on a loop. You can’t get the images out of your head.

Looking over your shoulder…

Being easily frightened…

Seeing a future of bleakness…

Remembering… not remembering… you’re not sure which one is worse.

This wasn’t you before… but it is now.

Is this your new normal?

On the outside, you look like you’re keeping it together.

But that couldn’t be farther from the truth.

Chronic Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can take a very serious toll on your mind and body. Living in a hyper-aroused state is associated with more illness and a poorer quality of life.

So, is there any good news?

Yes! Trauma-related struggles are some of the most treatable mental health conditions with the right therapy.

I am trained in an approach called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), which helps you recall disturbing experiences, reprocess them, and overcome their adverse effects. It’s an incredibly thorough and effective treatment.

EMDR targets specific distressing memories. It is a way of desensitizing you to them so that the memory feels more neutral or even peaceful when you recall it.

It teaches you specific skills to cope with current distress.

Many skills are taught through EMDR to help you regulate your emotional states, such as focusing on and recalling more positive memories.

This will be the focus of our first EMDR sessions: regulating your emotions and stress responses. We sometimes call this phase “resourcing.”

Once resourcing is complete, we will move on to reprocessing and desensitization. You’ll recall the event, and we’ll engage your entire brain through “bilateral stimulation” (e.g., activities like tapping on yourself or following a dot on a screen). We will repeat this process until it no longer feels distressing.

Here’s some good news: With EMDR, you never have to tell me the full story. You don’t have to tell me certain details if you don’t want to. EMDR will work regardless of what you choose to share with me.

Your trauma doesn’t define you.

I can’t tell you specifically how many sessions you will need, but it usually takes half the time of traditional talk therapy. I have had many successes where highly disturbing memories have been successfully reprocessed in 4-6 sessions.

Trauma or PTSD doesn’t have to be your new normal!
