Is virtual therapy right for me?
Virtual therapy works well for many, many people. It’s convenient: You don’t have to leave your home or take the time to drive across town… and if you’re wearing your pajama bottoms, I will probably never know about it.
Nearly every client who has seen me in person and virtually reported no difference in the session’s effectiveness.
That being said, virtual therapy is not for everyone. If you are experiencing any of the following, I would recommend you see a therapist in person:
- Auditory/visual hallucinations
- Paranoid delusions
- Active thoughts/plans of harm to yourself or others
- If you are in an unsafe situation where your privacy cannot be guaranteed
Does EMDR work virtually?
How long will I be in therapy?
How will I know if therapy is working?
All of my clients have established treatment goals. We will check in regularly about progress and make any changes necessary.
For EMDR clients, you will feel less disturbed when recalling disturbing memories. Eventually, you will feel no distress when reminded of those memories.
I went to therapy before, and it didn't work. Why would it work this time?
Therapists are like shoes. We look great on some people and not so good on others… and some shoes just plain don’t fit.
I know my expertise and my limitations as a professional. I will be transparent and honest with you if I am not the right pair of shoes for this particular occasion in your life.
Are you a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP)?
Yes, and there’s a reason I’m telling you this openly and honestly. If you are an HSP, this is something that you will know about me rather quickly because your perceptive abilities far exceed everyone else’s.
You can be sure that I am very attuned to your experience in sessions.
What qualifies you to do your job?
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) – which means I have a master’s degree in social work. It also means that I completed thousands of hours of clinical experience post-grad and nearly 100 hours of supervision by another licensed professional.
Certified Addiction Specialist (CAS) – I have completed specialized training in addiction and received supervision specific to addiction. While this is no longer my area of focus, this experience remains relevant to my practice.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) – I have completed an additional 48 hours of training on this treatment method specifically and professional consultation with an expert in the field. I am continuing to pursue certification/advanced training in EMDR to be considered an expert in this area. I continue to receive professional consultation from experts in the field.
Why does it matter that you are a licensed therapist?
Would you seek medical care from a doctor who wasn’t licensed to practice? Didn’t think so. And that is why you must seek mental health care from a licensed professional.
My license holds me to certain ethical and legal standards that unlicensed therapists are not held to and protect you as my client. I must also have a certain level of experience that unlicensed therapists do not have to have earned my title and commit to ongoing professional development and training.
What if I cry in front of you?
Best authentic Mexican food in Northern Colorado?
I absolutely LOVE authentic Mexican food. Some of my favorites are Tortilleria La Autentica in Loveland, El Mero Mero in Greeley, and Hacienda Real in Fort Collins.
If you’ve read this, let me know your personal favorites at your first session. I am always looking for good recommendations!
